- Child custody refers to the legal and practical relationship between a parent or guardian and a child, including the rights and responsibilities of caring for the child's upbringing. When parents divorce or separate, decisions regarding child custody determine where the child will live and who will make important decisions about their upbringing, education, healthcare, and general welfare.
